How to recycle your Daro Furniture

This article discusses how to recycle your Daro furniture. Our philosophy is to create high quality furniture that is designed to stand the test of time. The antithesis of throwaway fashion. We realise nothing lasts forever, however we aim to create products that contribute to a circular economy. (Products that can be recycled, upcycled or repaired) to avoid going to landfill. This article gives ideas how to recycle your Daro furniture.

Indoor Frames – Chairs and Sofas

Our indoor frames are made from natural sustainable materials like cane and rattan. These materials can be recycled or even upcycled. Check at your local recycling centre for details. In many cases we find that the furniture frame is often in great condition. It is simply the cushions that have perhaps seen better days. Instead of throwing away your furniture, why not consider new cushions? See our advice for cushion replacements and our cushion replacement service below.

Furniture Bases

Our Indoor furniture frames are produced with 2 different types of base to provide support to the base cushion.

Steel sprung bases like most metals, our steel sprung bases are used as they have longevity and are maintenance free. If there comes a time when you no longer want your furniture frame, the steel sprung base can be recycled so that the base can be re-purposed.

Webbed bases the elastic webbing layer is attached to the wooden frame and sits beneath the sofa or chair seat to provide support. Elastic webbing is a long strap interwoven with rubber and synthetic fibre. This material makes it more stretchable, durable, and resistant. For furniture that is well used, sometimes the webbing becomes less stretchy and causes sagging. When this happens the webbing can be replaced by new webbing, rather than discarding the chair/sofa/furniture altogether.

Swivel Rocker Mechanism

Over time, customers comment that their Swivel Rocker squeaks or struggles to “rock” which causes them to believe it is ready for the scrap heap. The majority of the time, the Swivel Rocker mechanism simply needs some maintenance. Check out our handy “how to” video that walks you through how to maintain the swivel rocker mechanism for all Daro Swivel Rocker chairs. It also explains how to replace the swivel rocker mechanism too. Click here.  If you are still wanting to discard your Swivel Rocker Chair, the mechanism can be recycled as it is made from metal. Alternatively, you could use the components for other things.

Cane binding and leather bindingMany of our Indoor furniture frames feature cane binding or leather binding. This adds further strengthening to the poles of the frame as well as decorative detail. Cane binding is a recyclable material.  Leather can be trickier to recycle however as it is a durable material it can be repurposed and reused in many ways.

Tables

We produce many tables to accompany our furniture ranges for both indoors and outdoors. Tables can often be upcycled by re-painting or re-spraying. Or why not mix it up and use them in other areas of the house? Mix and matching styles and trends is very on trend and sometimes is a great way of avoiding waste. However if your preference is to replace your table with a different type, then your indoor and outdoor table can be recycled at your local recycling centre.

Our table tops are made from glass or HPL (high pressure laminate) which can be recycled at your local recycling centre. The materials used to produce the table frames are made from cane, wood, rattan or aluminium which can also be recycled at your local recycling centre.

Outdoor Frames

Aluminium garden furniture is a great choice for outdoor seating due to the fact that it doesn’t corrode, is durable and long lasting and withstands the elements all year round. If there comes a time when you no longer want your aluminium frame, it is easy to recycle it. It is actually easier to melt and reshape aluminium when being recycled than in its primary, just-mined form. Alternatively, why not repaint/respray your furniture to update the look rather than get rid of it completely?

Outdoor Rattan Frames

Many of our outdoor frames are manufactured using synthetic rattan (PE rattan) which is also recyclable. Check at your local recycling centre for details.

Wood

Our wooden furniture is manufactured using sustainably sourced wood from sustainable forests. Wood is primarily recycled by being reused. It is a material which can be sawn down, sanded, re-painted, and varnished in order to have its appearance drastically changed to suit a wide range of different functions. For construction purposes, wood can also be recycled and turned into man-made medium-density fibreboard (or MDF) wood which is achieved by essentially compressing and processing different wood residuals.

Cushions

If your old cushions are not in very good condition there are options for disposing of them in a more environmentally friendly way.

Many local council’s kerbside collections will accept textiles for recycling. You need to check what is allowed where you are.

Here is where you can find details of your local council’s recycling facilities

Your local recycling centre will probably have a textile bin as well.

Alternatively why not re-use or upcycle the cushion filling and use elsewhere? Animal beds, stuffing cushions, floor cushions, and draft excluders. They could of course be used for toys, and I hope it would go without saying that if the toy is to be used by a young child the filling needs to be washable and should be clean before use.

Cushion Foams

Cushion foams can be re-purposed to avoid ending up in landfill. Foams can be put through a selection process, specialised cleaning and sterilising process before being re-used as “crumb foam” in carpet underlay. Small offcuts of foam can be bonded together in large blocks and used in commercial seating applications. It is always worth doing some research to see what recycling companies are out there who could utilise these types of materials.

Cushion Replacements

We always advocate our cushion replacement services as we feel that it is always better to improve what you have already rather than throw it away. Our frames are built to last, yet over time cushions can get worn, dirty and lose their shape. Therefore, we offer a cushion replacement service whereby you can have new cushions made for your Daro frame.
