Cane and rattan – the natural furniture choice

handmade-frames

All our Daro products are designed and created with sustainability in mind. Cane and rattan materials – the natural furniture choice. Consumers seek out natural materials to add texture, depth and bring calm to their home. Bringing the outdoors in to create a calming, tranquil haven.  Cane and rattan materials are the natural furniture choice as they are also sourced and produced in a sustainable way.

Our beautiful frames are handcrafted by our expert teams in Indonesia utilising high quality renewable raw materials that are sourced sustainably. Our indoor frames are produced using cane and rattan.

Cane

Cane is the name used for the wood like pole that has a solid but flexible inner core. Growing at a rate of 2-3cm per day, it is therefore considered a renewable raw material that is sustainable.

Rattan

Growing like a weed, with a similar internal structure to cane, rattan plants produce the material used for furniture manufacture 7 times faster than a tree produces wood. Each vine can grow up to a whopping 200m in length! Harvesting rattan is done by hand and the tip of the vine is then re-planted at the base of its tree ready to repeat the process.

Rattan is commercially useful as it encourages forest retention. The trees are kept in situ to support the rattan. As a result, choosing rattan is a really sustainable furniture choice.

Daro rattan frames are handwoven. The outer layer of the plant is peeled off and used for weaving and the core of the plant is used in the furniture, meaning that wastage of the raw material is low.

Wicker

The term ‘wicker’ is the art of weaving and therefore wicker can be considered for many different types of material. Most commonly, it refers to cane and rattan.

Quality Craftsmanship

Daro uses the highest quality natural materials to produce its furniture ranges.  Daro frames are hand-made by our teams in Indonesia who have an abundance of experience in processing and weaving rattan. This is also one of the reasons why Daro has succeeded so well in developing rattan furniture that has both a beautiful design and top quality craftsmanship. Best in class.

The combination of skilled craftsmanship of our frames, hand woven in Indonesia combined with the production of our own cushions manufactured in our own UK based soft furnishings factory means that every piece of Daro furniture has been lovingly made and built to last.

As well as durability, cane and rattan materials are the natural furniture choice because they are easy to clean and require low maintenance. The cleaning of rattan furniture is done simply with a wet cloth once the furniture is dustyWe recommend cleaning the furniture once a year, with white soap flakes, lukewarm water and a cloth.

Recyclability

Cane and rattan are also a great choice for furniture as they can be recycled (or even upcycled) when a consumer decides they no longer want that piece of furniture.  Daro is continuously striving to create furniture pieces that contribute to a circular economy. By sourcing materials that can be recycled, repaired or re-used or re-purposed means that waste can be avoided. Extending the life of the materials we use.
